      <image:title>What is Sleep Apnea - Why do some people get snoring or sleep apnea?</image:title>
      <image:caption>Imagine that the bones of the face are a box. The structures that make up your throat, like the tonsils and tongue, must fit inside the box and still leave enough room for you to breathe. In some people the box isn’t big enough, even with a normal-sized tongue or tonsils. In other people, the soft tissues are too large and there is not much room left for airflow. When the muscles keeping the airway open relax, they fall inwards and block airflow. Partial obstruction of airflow leads to vibrations that we hear as snoring. Even more obstruction leads to decreases in airflow that we call sleep apnea.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6356d9429c462a5a34c065b5/91c89910-c206-4bf0-9bf3-2287cf50b2e8/What-is-snoring-and-sleep-apnea.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>What is Sleep Apnea - What is snoring and sleep apnea?</image:title>
      <image:caption>Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) are conditions that occur during sleep. When we fall asleep the muscles surrounding the airway relax and become uncoordinated. These muscles include the tongue, the soft palate (the roof of the mouth), and the sides of the throat, which include the tonsils. In some people there is not enough room in the airway for breathing after the throat muscles relax. This leads to snoring and airflow blockages that we call obstructive sleep apnea.</image:caption>

      <image:title>What is Sleep Apnea - How do I figure out if I have snoring or sleep apnea?</image:title>
      <image:caption>Sleep apnea is diagnosed with an overnight sleep test called a polysomnogram (PSG). A PSG can be completed during an overnight stay in our sleep lab or in your own home using equipment we provide.</image:caption>

      <image:title>What is Sleep Apnea - How do I know how bad my sleep apnea is?</image:title>
      <image:caption>OSA is classified as mild, moderate, or severe. People with more severe sleep apnea may have an increased risk of different health conditions. However, these categories do not match up very well with how sleepy OSA makes you feel -- some people have mild sleep apnea and they feel very tired, and some people have very severe sleep apnea and they do not feel sleepy.</image:caption>

      <image:title>What is Sleep Apnea - Why is sleep apnea bad for my health?</image:title>
      <image:caption>Decreases in airflow can cause your blood oxygen levels to drop. Oxygen level drops are stressful for the heart, brain, and other organs. Severe sleep apnea has been linked to many health problems including depression, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke risk, heart attack risk, and automobile accidents. Airflow decreases also cause disruptions from sleep because the brain needs to wake up to open up the airway. These repeated awakenings may cause some people to feel like sleep is not restful, leading them to be tired throughout the day.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Treating Sleep Apnea - Do I have to wear CPAP?</image:title>
      <image:caption>Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the most common sleep apnea treatment. A mask is connected to an air pressure machine that keeps the throat from closing overnight. CPAP is a very effective treatment option for OSA if you can comfortably wear it, but only about 50% of patients that try CPAP can eventually use it comfortably and sleep with it every night. Dr. Kent and his team can often help fix problems that make it hard for you to wear CPAP, but if it doesn’t work for you, you have many other medical and surgical treatment options.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Inspire is an FDA-approved treatment that involves implantation of a small device under the skin. While you sleep, gentle stimulation of key muscles keeps the airway open without the need for any additional mask or machine. Dr. Kent was the first surgeon and sleep medicine provider in Tennessee to offer Inspire therapy for his patients. His team is currently the only Inspire Excellence Program Member in the Middle Tennessee region. Dr. Kent has a deep understanding of the patient factors and anatomy required for a good result with Inspire. He has published impactful research with other experts in his field regarding the patient selection process, how Inspire keeps the airway open, and how to make the surgery easier for patients and surgeons.</image:caption>

It’s also safe for most 1.5T and 3T MRI scans. • Powered by a sleep wearable Genio is powered by a small activation chip worn comfortably under the chin overnight. In the morning, it’s removed and placed on its portable daily charger. • Controlled with an intuitive smart phone app The optional Genio smartphone app makes it easy to start, pause, and adjust your therapy for precise comfort. The app and the activation chip are both upgradeable without the need for additional procedures.</image:caption>
