Dr. Kent publishes important research regarding the surgical treatment of sleep apnea. In collaboration with other world leaders in sleep apnea research, he has investigated patient factors affecting the response to Inspire therapy (including drug-induced sleep endoscopy), and described a new surgical approach to Inspire implantation that has become the worldwide standard of care by reducing the number of required incisions from three to two.
His research focuses on the neurophysiology of the upper airway, especially mechanisms for control of breathing in sleep apnea and measurements of the upper airway that inform surgical decision making. Dr. Kent has been awarded grant funding from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and was recently awarded more than $4 million from the National Institutes of Health to study ansa cervicalis stimulation (ACS), a new treatment for sleep apnea first described by his study team. He is one of the only sleep surgeons in the US with federal research support from the National Institutes of Health.
